Tomoko Ueyama
Born in 1972 and residing in Hamamatsu City.
Sound Artist, Sound Engineer, and President of Mimijima: Ear-Island of Sound and People

I create sound installations and sound workshops and focus on how people perceive the world through their sense of hearing, sight, and touch, and the moments when various materials become sound and produce value. I also make audiovisual recordings and sound productions, focusing on the reality and fiction revealed by the manner in which hearing and vision (sound and image) are structured.

My works have been exhibited at the Sound Design Factory in Hamamatsu City (2019) and also at overseas exhibitions such as the Device_art (Croatia, 2007) and Ars Electronica (Austria, 2000). The workshops I hold at medical institutions, museums, elementary schools, and other locations are tailored to the environment and physical conditions. As a sound engineer, I took part in the monologue opera “The New Era” (composed by Masahiro Miwa, directed by Shinjiro Maeda, at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater Small Hall in Aichi and the Phoenix Hall in Osaka, 2017), “Happiness is in the Day-to-Day” directed by Werner Penzel and Ayako Mogi (2016), and Yasunori Ikeda’s “3 Portraits & June Night” (2012).

I graduated from the Stage Sound Effect Course of the Theatrical Arts Department at Osaka University of Arts, the Art and Media Lab Department at the Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS), and completed graduate studies at the International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences’ (IAMAS) Graduate School of Media Expression.
From 1995, I worked for the NHK Osaka Broadcasting Station for three years as a sound staff and sound effects assistant, engaging in TV program MA studio operator work. At the same time, I worked as an assistant director and timekeeper in the production of a medical program at Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation from 1995 until the program ended in 2009. Since 1998, I have been involved in the production and recording of video and music, the production of sound artworks, and workshop planning and production. In February 2013, I established “Mimijima: Ear-Island of Sound and People,” an association that explores the hidden relationship between sound and people in the world and creates new works centered on sound art, video sound design, and sound workshops. Since then, I have been the president of the association. From April 2010 to March 2016, I was a part-time lecturer at Nagoya Zokei University, teaching sound production classes and general education lectures. From 2019, I have been a part-time lecturer of the Faculty of Design at Shizuoka University of Art and Culture, teaching classes on sound recording technology and sound production for video.
